West County Community High School, March 2012 – present

Create and present curriculum on reading and writing, including Shakespeare, Salinger, essays and research papers.

Solano Community College, March 2007 – December 2008, and August, 2011 – present

Create and present curriculum emphasizing critical thinking skills as fundamental to writing and making positive life decisions. Supervise reading and writing lab, grade content mastery exams. My teaching strategies include using an electronic draft process and teaching with new media, such as Prezi and LiveBinders. As a member of STAT, the Solano Technical Advisory Team, I am helping update the Technology Plan. I became certified in e-College instruction at Solano CC.

Technical Writing Instructor – Vancouver Island University, September 2009 – present

I teach an ongoing 8-week moodle course, “Manual Writing.” Students include nurses, creative hot-air balloonists, government employees, and more. My knowledge of technical writing was acquired as a documentation lead and senior technical writer at various high tech companies in Silicon Valley since 1976.

After-school Teacher – San Pedro Elementary School, Marin County, CA, February, 2011 to June, 2011

Created engaging programs for 5th graders, including sports, homework, and basic skills intervention. Maintained classroom order and pitched-in to fulfill program goals. Ran the computer club.

After many years of technical writing in New York City and Silicon Valley, I started this consulting company. Due to outsourcing, I began substitute-teaching while earning my credential, and I continued technology consulting, helping  clients, such as law firms, school districts, and local businesses, use technology effectively. I engage in frequent twitter conversations with education leaders. I developed a road map for schools to become technology centers, available at http://www.schoodl.com and  published articles and presentations on technology.

Student Teacher of English – College Park High School, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek Intermediate School, September 2009 – January 2010

Taught freshman, sophomores, and juniors under the supervision of master teachers and program adviser. Excellent references available. Special lessons included: business cover letter for Odysseus, iambic pentameter in Shakespeare’s sonnets, and recognizing blank verse in Shakespeare’s plays.

Substitute Teacher – Napa, Mt. Diablo, John Swett, and Fairfield School Districts, and the California STAR Program, August 2006 – December, 2008

Taught all K-12 levels, Special Education, IB, and parolees, and graded High School English Exit Exams.

8th grade Provisional English Teacher (60%) and ASES Before- and After- School Teacher -  Vallejo Unified School District, September 2007-June 2008, and March 2008 – June 2008

Taught 2-periods of eighth grade strategic English. Developed lesson plans based on state standards, and established effective classroom management techniques. Students’ standardized test scores improved. Participated in team and district meetings. Helped develop the on-site ASES program, and supervised employees. Assisted students with science projects, class work, basic skills, and recreational activities. Organized paperwork, and ran the before-school program.

Developed and taught classes in English, Math 1, Algebra, Interpersonal Communication, Psychology, Ethics, and Supervision.

Technical Instructor – Total Technical Institute, 1981-2

The first course curriculum that I wrote was for this 6-month Introduction to Computers class on:

  • computer architecture
  • numbering systems (binary and hexadecimal)
  • programming languages
  • Business System Analysis and Design
